Have you ever wondered how drones work?  Now's your chance to learn how to build one from scratch and how to fly it!  Consumer drones, also known as Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), are becoming increasingly popular amongst the hobbyist and professional operator.


Skygear Solutions hosts several One-Day Build & Fly class sessions during the Spring and Summer months across Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.  This web page contains all the information you need to know to sign up and prepare for one of these classes.

STEP 1:
Register with the FAA
You must go to the link shown below and register for a new account.  If the student is 13 years old or older, he/she may do this themselves, under their own name.  If the student is younger than 13 years old, then a parent or guardian must register with the FAA.  Once you properly log into your FAA account, you will be given a choice to select either Model Aircraft or Non-Model Aircraft.  Choose Model Aircraft as the other selection is for commercial use of drones.  You will then need to enter some personal details and acknowledge a safety guide.  After you pay a $5.00 fee, you will receive an FAA registration number, which is valid for the next three years.  This number is to be physically placed on all of the drones flown by the person registering and should also be carried by the person while flying any of their aircraft.

STEP 2:
Register for the Class

** ANY age can attend this class as a student.  Up to 12 years old must have full time supervision.  From 13 to 17 years old must have parental consent (in person at beginning of class).  18+ are also more than welcome as many adults also take the class.

STEP 3:
Purchase the Drone KIT
The drone to be built by each student enrolled in the class is a 500mm quadcopter with remote controller, two batteries, and a battery charger.  It also includes a very sophisticated flight control computer and GPS system.  This allows the aircraft to fly with incredible stability and to lock into position by its connection to GPS satellites.  If the signal from the remote controller is ever lost, the drone "knows" where it took off from and will automatically return there safely.  All of the chosen components for this build have been previously matched up and tested / test flown.  This particular quadcopter drone has the capability to carry a camera but for the purpose of this class, will not include one.  Included with the KIT are two batteries, each yielding a flight time of approximately 10-12 minutes.  Additional batteries are available in the accessories section on the linked page to order the KIT.  Camera mounts are also available on that page but, if purchased, will need to be installed at a different time than the class day.

The total cost for the parts, tools, and instruction is $495.  To purchase the KIT, use the link to the right or at the top of this page.  You will need to create an account with Skygear to get through the checkout process.  The prepared KIT with tools, pre-charged batteries, and FAA registration label will be ready for the student on the day of the scheduled class.
STEP 4:
Read Know Before You Fly Information

"KNOW BEFORE YOU FLY" is an educational campaign to help drone operators know how to fly safely and responsibly.

There are a few basic rules that everyone should follow when flying drones.  These rules are highlighted in two documents and a comprehensive website detailing all the information that you need to know.  The first focus should be on this flyer:

Attend the Class
Guided by drone experts, each student is able to work through a full day of learning, building, and flying.
